Of the 34 plus species of Scottish midges, the vast majority of midge bites are caused by the female of just one species - Culicoides impunctatus - the dreaded Highland Midge.
It is believed that a biting midge can sense a suitable blood host from up to 100 metres away. They do this first by detecting the carbon dioxide in exhaled breath and secondly by picking up particular scents given off by the animal that help them to home in on their target.
Despite their apparent penchant for human blood, the biting midge's favourite tipple is actually a larger mammal, such as a cow or horse.
The Midgeater⢠Max works by mimicking a large animal, emitting carbon dioxide mixed with a special scented bait which makes the biting midge think that it has found a bovine meal. The midge follows the trail to the source where it is trapped inside the Midgeater⢠Max.
How the Midgeater⢠Max works
- After ignition, the Midgeater⢠Max uses a flameless catalytic process to produce carbon dioxide from Patio Gas.
- The carbon dioxide is then passed over a specially formulated bait, which scents the gas making it particularly attractive to highland midges
- Using thermoelectric materials, heat energy from the catalytic process is used to generate electricity which powers the Midgeater⢠Max suction fan that sucks the insects into a net as they approach the machine.
What area can the Midgeater Max clear?
Depending on the wind, the Midgeater Max covers an arc fan shaped area of about 1 acre.

How to use the Midgeater⢠Max
The Midgeater⢠Max is designed to be run continuously so that insects are drawn to the machine whenever they emerge, rather than to the people on whom they would like to feed.
Calor Patio Gas cylinders are attached to the Midgeater⢠Max with simple clip-on regulators and, under normal circumstances, a 13kg cylinder (not included) will provide enough gas to keep the Midgeater⢠running for approximately one month.
Routine maintenance of the Midgeater Max is very straight forward and consists of:
- changing the disposable bag when it is full (these can also be washed and reused)
- changing the Patio Gas cylinder when it is empty
- changing the bait tablet, ideally when the gas bottle is changed.
Packed unit dimensions are 1230mm x 475mm x 525mm. Assembled unit dimensions are approximately 1500mm x 475mm x 525mm. Inside the service pack you will find a bait tablet and two capture bags.
